HINDU residents in Kapar, Selangor, are up in arms over an attempt to remove a 130-year-old temple known as the Sri Maha Mariamman, Malaysia Nanban reported.
Devotees said the temple, which is located at the former Bukit Raja plantation, was first built in 1889 and had continuously served the workers and the community.
Temple committee chairman Balasundram Venkadasalam said that they recently received an evacuation notice, stating that the temple was encroaching onto land belonging to the plantation company-turned-developer.
The notice demanded that the land be handed back to its owner to make way for a residential project.
The developer has given various reasons for wanting the temple to be relocated elsewhere, including possible flooding hazards from a proposed retention pond nearby.
MIC vice-president Datuk A. Kohilan Pillay and Selangor MIC chairman MB Raja vowed to bring up the issue with the state government for a peaceful solution.
