KOTA KINABALU: Barisan Nasional should form the government on its own mandate in the coming general election, says Sabah MCA.
Its chief Lu Yen Tung said Barisan suffered a downfall in the 14th General Election (GE14) in 2018, but it came back into government through a coalition in 2020.
At the end of the day, Barisan should win on its own (kerajaan mutlak) to be in government, he said during his speech at the Barisan convention here yesterday.
Lu added that this was for the people and supporters who had stuck with the coalition through thick and thin, and did not leave when the government changed.
He said unlike Pakatan Harapan parties that dragged the people with them to the streets (through demonstrations) and having a prime minister quit his post due to persistent in-fighting, Barisan did not do any of this.
“In the spirit of solidarity and for the sake of political stability, we supported Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia as the next prime minister, but we were instead called the backdoor government,” he added.
Lu said this did not make any sense at all when Bersatu had been the “main culprit” that brought Barisan down in GE14.
Speaking further, he said there was no place for extreme politics that always harped on sensitive issues including racial sentiments.
Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) deputy president Datuk Arthur Kurup said Sabahans should rally behind Barisan with the former ruling coalition surging back in Peninsular Malaysia.
