A YOUNG Indian couple in Bagan Serai, Perak, organised a friendly football match as part of their wedding celebration, Malaysia Nanban reported.
Prabu Nganasekaran and Shamini Chandran decided to host the match to revive a dying tradition in the local Indian community.
SJK (T) Ladang Gedong’s former students’ association president Paramasivam, who helped to organise the event, said weddings and temple festivals in rural areas used to be major celebrations, often accompanied by football matches.
However, this was no longer observed.
The Prabu-Shamini Wedding Cup match was held to revive the community spirit and encourage interest in football among the Indian community, he said.
The match, which was held at the school field, saw Bagan Serai’s Young City beat neighbouring Parit Buntar team 5-4.
Bagan Serai MIC chairman KL Moorthi was the special guest.
