Covid-19: Cases drop below 1,000 mark, nationwide ICU bed usage at 54.2pc

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia recorded 922 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday (May 3), bringing the total number of cases in the country to 4,451,781 infections since the pandemic began.

The Health Ministry’s CovidNow portal reported that 921 of Tuesday’s new Covid-19 cases were local transmissions while one imported infection was logged.

Recoveries continued to outpace new infections, with 5,520 patients recovering on Tuesday. This brings the cumulative number of recoveries in Malaysia to 4,384,384 since the pandemic began.

The portal also reported that there were 31,833 active cases currently in the country, with 30,821, or 96.8%, observing home quarantine and 14 individuals admitted to low-risk quarantine and treatment centres.

The CovidNow portal reported that 998 patients, or 3.14% of the total, were currently admitted to hospital for treatment. The number of Covid-19 patients warded at intensive care units (ICU) throughout the country stands at 69, with 46 of these patients requiring ventilation support.

The ICU utilisation rate nationwide stood at 54.2%, with five states or localities recording ICU usage rates of more than 60%.

Kedah had the highest ICU utilisation rate at 72.6%, followed by Kuala Lumpur (69.1%), Kelantan (65.2%), Johor (64.9%) and Selangor (63.5%).

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry’s GitHub data repository reported that nine Covid-19 deaths were reported on Tuesday, of which five were classified as brought-in-dead (BID).

This brings the death toll to 35,564.
