SEREMBAN: A 29-year-old doctor lost almost RM175,000 after being offered a part-time digital marketing and sales job in an online scam.
Her troubles started when she befriended a woman identified only as June via Instagram, said state Commercial Crimes Department chief Supt Aibee Abdul Ghani.
He said the doctor was offered a part-time job on a commercial platform.
“She agreed and was asked to join a WhatsApp group administered by someone named Alex,” he said in a statement.
Supt Aibee said the doctor was told that she had to purchase items from the online platform and make the necessary payments.
“She was told that she would be paid a 10% commission for all purchases made. She agreed and began making the purchases,” he said.
After making an initial purchase of RM99 early this month, the victim had on April 9 paid almost RM175,000 into seven individual accounts.
“The victim was told that she would receive her commission on April 10.
“However, she realised something fishy when she was told to make a payment for personal insurance coverage totalling almost RM75,000,” he said, adding that once the sum was paid, she would get the refund for capital and commission.
She then lodged a police report.
