BUTTERWORTH: There are sufficient chicken eggs in Penang for this Chinese New Year, with full supply expected to resume soon, says Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry’s state director S. Jegan.
“At present, our checks showed that the supply of chicken eggs is sufficient for the festival.
“Only some sundry shops are experiencing disruptions in deliveries.
“Farmers are currently producing 50% to 60% of their capacity, with supplies expected to resume normal within the next three months,” he told reporters yesterday after inspecting Lotus’ stores in Bagan Ajam.
Under the ministry’s maximum price scheme implementation for Chinese New Year, Jegan said the 15-day enforcement period from Jan 15 to 29 will see eight items gazetted.
Round cabbages from Indonesia and China (except for Beijing cabbages), potatoes from China, garlic from China, white pomfret, white prawn, pork belly, pork meat, and live pigs (price controlled only at farms) are on the list.
Jegan added that 122 enforcement officers and 66 monitoring officers had been tasked with enforcing the ruling at strategic locations in Penang, such as markets and supermarkets.
He said so far this year, the ministry had inspected 3,560 premises in Penang and taken action in 48 cases for various violations, with RM81,047.50 worth of items seized and RM8,100 worth of compound notices issued.
He said the ministry in Penang also received 105 complaints related to pricing and the supply of items.
