JOHOR BARU: A total of 22 victims from six families are currently seeking shelter at a temporary flood relief centre in Pontian, says the District Disaster Management Committee.
It added that the victims have been placed at the SK Seri Bukit Panjang flood relief centre, which opened at 8pm on Tuesday (Aug 2).
“The victims are Kampung Seri Bukit Panjang residents who were affected by floods caused by heavy rain that lasted for more than two hours starting 4.30pm on Tuesday,” it said.
“As of 7.30am today, it is the only flood relief centre open statewide,” the committee added on Wednesday (Aug 3).
Flash floods also occurred in parts of Johor Baru on Tuesday following a heavy downpour that begun at around noon.
It caused floods at Hospital Sultanah Aminah and Jalan Persiaran Abu Bakar Sultan fronting Lido Beach as well as main roads such as Jalan Yahya Awal, Jalan Ayer Molek and Jalan Wong Ah Fook in downtown Johor Baru.
Jalan Kolam Ayer, Jalan Mahmoodiah, Jalan Tun Abdul Razak and Kampung Mohd Amin (Perling) were also affected.
As a result, hundreds of cars parked at several parking lots in the city were damaged by the floods and had to be towed away by tow trucks.
Floodwaters rose and covered almost half of a typical car’s height but the murky waters in the city receded after 2.30pm.
