NVIDIA Ada Lovelace Top-End GPU Rumoured to Peak At 800W

Posted on Jun 19, 2022 by lau

Back in April, rumours that NVIDIA’s next-generation GeForce RTX 40 series, powered by the Ada Lovelace (Lovelace) architecture, would require more power to run, compared to the current Ampere architecture. Now, a new rumour is suggesting that the desktop’s top-end GPU will have a peak TDP of 800W.

The rumours first appeared on Twitter, posted by the prominent leakster and rumour monger, kopite7kime (@kopite7kimi). According to kopite, the AD102, which is expected to be the premium and top-tier version of the Lovelace architecture, will be the one that will be commanding that absurdly high 800W of power, while running at peak performance.

The rumour train doesn’t stop with the AD102 Lovelace desktop GPU either. In the same tweet, kopite lists down three more GPUs, the AD103, AD104, and AD106, all of which will have peak TDP of 450W, 400W, and 260W, respectively. Adding to that list, they also suggest that the laptop variants of said GPU models will also peak power draws between 140W and 170W.

A truth. The power limits:
AD102, 800W;
AD103 (DT), 450W, AD103 (Mobile), 175W;
AD104 (DT), 400W, AD104 (Mobile), 175W;
AD106 (DT), 260W, AD106 (Mobile), 140W.
But I don’t think we need to use the full power cap.

Now, it is important to note that these numbers are for peak TDP and not base TDP. That metric alone still remains undetermined as of today, and we’re certain if it were asked anything regarding Lovelace, NVIDIA would simply provide us with its boilerplate answer on how it doesn’t comment on unfinished and unreleased products, as well as rumours.

This isn’t the first time speculation about Lovelace’s TDP has come into the limelight either. Back in February, Kopite also loosely “confirmed” that NVIDIA was planning on upping its TDP game with the RTX 40 series, with the cards running at the earlier mentioned 450W TDP, but nothing regarding the 800W rumour back then.

A GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FE.

For that matter, and with the rumour that NVIDIA is planning on launching each SKU of its RTX 40 series on a month-to-month basis, starting from October with the supposed RTX 4090, we’ll just have to wait until the GPU brand makes Lovelace official.
