HONG Kong singer Gillian Chung (pic), who was once married to a man eight years her junior, vowed to never date younger men as she is tired of “babysitting” them, China Press reported.
Chung, 41, lamented her failed marriage during a recent episode of a TV variety show called 90s Dating Agency, saying that dating younger men was “too tiring”.
“I don’t want to watch him grow up; I don’t want to babysit him; I am not his mother; I do not need to carry the burden of educating him.
“This is too big a responsibility. It is too tiring,” she said.
Instead, she now prefers someone who could take care of her.
“I feel it is better to love oneself more and be the one to decide on your own happiness.
“We don’t have to put up with or cater to anyone,” she said.
Her marriage to cosmetologist Dr Michael Lai lasted only 14 months. They divorced in 2020.
Chung is one-half of the Cantopop duo Twins along with Charlene Choi. The two reached the height of their popularity in the early 2000s before branching out into acting.
> Shanghai is seeing a spike in divorces as the city gradually returns to normal after a prolonged Covid-19 lockdown, China Press reported.
According to local media reports, all sessions for divorce registrations in the coming one month at multiple districts have been fully booked.
Take for example the Xuhui district, in which all slots were fully booked for the next month from Mondays to Saturdays.
If it could process 12 divorce cases a day, this means there is an estimated 288 couples in the district queuing just to get a divorce.
According to a source, marriage and divorce registrations were postponed during the recent lockdown, which caused a backlog of cases.
As such, those who wanted to get divorced would have to wait in line for their turn.
Others, however, speculated that these couples, who were forced to spend a longer time with each other during the lockdown, ended up realising that their marriage was just not working.
Internet users joked that the lockdown became a test of the strength of a relationship. Many “failed” this test, leading to a higher divorce rate.
