Gabriel William Anthony, 54, is believed to have had a heart attack.
He had been performing since his schooldays, appearing in many Indian dance performances, including the Barathanatyam.
Fellow artistes who knew him said the dancer often expressed a wish to die doing what he loved and that his wish had tragically come true.
They said he was rushed to hospital but died on the way there.
