RESIDENTS in a Tamil Nadu town lit candles in front of their homes to show their opposition to vote buying, Malaysia Nanban reported.
The campaigning for the urban local government elections ended on Thursday with voters going to the polls tomorrow.
A total of 57,778 candidates are in contention for 12,607 posts in 21 city councils, 138 municipalities, and 490 town councils statewide.
Cash inducements popularly referred to as “Vitamin C” are allegedly rampant despite stringent enforcement by the state election commission.
Residents in a town in Tirunelveli district got together to take a vow not to accept any cash from politicians for their vote, and lit candles to show their stance.
The residents said they hope their demonstration would inspire folk in other towns to reject money politics as well.
